This paper reports on the development of a 3 MW gas turbine generator set developed as the prime mover for a hybrid-electric locomotive propulsion system. The lightweight turbine generator set described in the paper is also suitable for marine power generation applications. The paper describes the direct drive, high-speed generator and the lightweight skid-mounted turbine/alternator package developed by the program as well as plans for both laboratory and field testing of the system. Critical technical challenges and the solutions developed by the program are also presented in the paper.
