Abstract
The authors discuss, from quite different perspectives, some commonly held intuitions about design. In particular, Kota presents a functional design methodology and argues that distinctions between functions, constraints, and structures are essential to well organized design processes, which he sees as involving a hierarchical process from conceptual to routine design. Ward disagrees.
