This paper emphasizes the point that performance testing of large steam turbines in accordance with the provisions of ASME Power Test Code No. 6–1964 requires extensive coordination between turbine manufacturer and the operating utility. This paper outlines the procedures followed in preparing for, conducting, and analyzing the results of performance tests conducted on two, duplicate, 580-MW cross-compound steam turbines installed in the Joliet Station of the Commonwealth Edison Company. Selection of test instrumentation and methods of calculating the test performance are discussed. Application of on-line and off-line digital computers for calculation of test results is reviewed. Problems encountered during the tests which affected accuracy of calculated results are outlined.
