A method for damage identification in composite materials by model updating techniques in dynamics has been proposed. The modeling and the general aspects of the damage in composite materials have been briefly described. Damage is evaluated by using the sensitivity method (modal approach) which is employed to identify the stiffness properties of laminated composite tubes. Stiffness properties of extension, bending, twisting, and transverse shear effects have been identified from a single test. This will allow further damage quantification. Results obtained by numerical simulation show the feasibility of the proposed methodology.
