A conceptual long-strike ultra-precision actuator is proposed with this article. The design method is inspired by the unique relationship of voltage versus displacement with a coil-wound potentiometer. As an example, an embodiment of a novel two-stage actuator is built based on the method. The theoretical error analysis demonstrates that the actuator can achieve low double-digit nanometer actuating accuracy over a long-strike range. Some other advantages, such as fast actuating speed, automatic control, and cost effectiveness, are also expected.
