Abstract
One of the greatest challenges of this century is the reduction or elimination of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions, primarily by moving the global energy system from carbon-based fuels to low- or zero-carbon systems. The energy systems that produce carbon emissions are inherently physical and must be replaced by other physical systems, which means the material constraints of building this new infrastructure cannot be ignored.
