The potential for parabolic trough solar power plant implementation in the semiarid area located at the Brazilian northeast region, throughout the São Francisco river basin, has been estimated as being , based on the simulation results of a typical solar energy generating systems (SEGS)-like power plant modeled using experimental solar irradiation measured at an eligible site. The use of electricity generated with SEGS-like power plants will help to save water that otherwise will be necessary to run in hydroelectric turbines and will contribute to diversify the Brazilian electrical energy matrix, which is predominantly hydroelectrical. The equivalent volume flow rate that can be saved with the implementation of solar power potential was estimated as , which is 1.8 times the mean flow rate of the São Francisco river.
