The report deals with the results of the investigation into the detergent action of additives for motor oils in the presence of an electric field. It has been experimentally established that an electromotive force of the order of 1 v arises between two different metals separated with a motor oil layer. When using a nonpolar paraffin-naphthenic fraction of the same oil no electromotive force is created. The experiments were carried out with a motor oil with various detergent additives using an aluminum electrode in combination with duralumin, iron, copper, lead, bronze, and tin electrodes. The ability of various detergent additives to wash deposits from the metal surface or to prevent their formation under the action of an electric field has been studied using radioactive carbon black.
